Art Portfolio nourishes the talent of Brookwood’s young artists

Open only to eighth graders who have demonstrated a deep interest in art, this small-group, intensive-study opportunity gives students a chance to come together as young artists and share their interest while allowing them extra time in the studio to further explore with various options in their work.
Art Portfolio students meet weekly for forty-five minutes (this year during Thursday lunch and Conference Period) in Brookwood’s Upper School art studio. During this time students work on individual projects ranging from self-portraits to ceramics pieces or on various group projects. In the past portfolio students have painted murals and worked an on-site sculpture. This year the group is creating an installation piece for April’s Student Art show.
Some students also use this time to put together an actual portfolio of their best work to highlight their creative talent and artistic skills. They often include this portfolio as part of their secondary school applications.
Last year, artwork produced by students in Portfolio won several awards – including Gold and Silver keys, as well as a few Honorable Mentions – in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art competition. The recognition was an honor, but most exciting was that the students’ artwork was on exhibit for more than a month at Boston’s Transportation Building.
“Having a class such as this at the Middle School level is quite unusual,” says Kathy. “I’m happy offer it to the students, and I’m so excited about the level of work our students accomplish. We are fortunate to have such a committed, creative, and talented group of young artists here at Brookwood."
