Bon Vwazen = Good Neighbors

On Tuesday, February 23, students in grades Pre-K through 5 shared their responses to the needs of the Haitian community at a special event, Extending Hands to Haiti.
“The exploration of community and what it means to be a citizen – locally and globally – begins in Pre-K and expands as students progress through Brookwood,” says Lower School Head Nancy Evans.  “It’s not surprising, therefore, that our students were inspired to take action to help our global neighbors.”
Creative energies and student enthusiasm were in full gear at the event, which focused on moving children from empathy to action. From Haitian house pins and art note cards to a hula hoop contest and read-a-thon, children created a variety of projects to promote an understanding of the culture of Haiti and raise much needed funds.
“Our first goal is, of course, to respond to need and offer help in the most meaningful and useful way possible.  Secondarily, we have the opportunity to learn more about the rich history and culture of Haiti,” comments Sven Holch, Social Studies Coordinator.
Over $12,000 was raised at the event, which will be donated to Partners in Health.   Traynor Canny, a representative from Partners in Health, was in attendance and shared an overview of the group's past and current work in Haiti.
