Thank you to poet and former Brookwood teacher Joyce Swagerty for joining us last week to lead a special Earth Day Poetry celebration! Her visit culminated in the creation of an original Earth Day Renga (a collaborative poem) to “honor Earth and celebrate peace.” After taking a nature walk and capturing some observations using their 5 senses, students used those ideas to write haiku — a special kind of poem with 5 syllables on the first line, 7 syllables on the second line and 5 syllables on the last line. They then worked in groups of two or three to weave their ideas into a group haiku. At the end of the day, students and teachers from grades 1 through 5 gathered back together to listen to the amazing  Renga.
