Report of Giving

Pictured above: Fourth grade students collaboratively explore using virtual reality goggles, which were generously gifted from the Parents’ Association through their Faculty Wish List program.

To the loyal and generous donors of Brookwood School, thank you!

Collectively, more than 500 parents, alumni, grandparents, employees and friends demonstrated their philanthropic support to the Brookwood Fund as well as Endowment and Financial Aid initiatives last year. These charitable contributions built innovative and dynamic learning opportunities, empowered our faculty with professional development opportunities, maintained our extensive campus facilities and provided financial assistance to as many families as possible. Like many independent schools, tuition does not cover the full cost of educating a student. The gap is funded by charitable contributions made by generous donors who, above all else, love Brookwood School.

It is our honor to showcase the names of the people who contributed from July 1, 2018–June 30, 2019 in the list below.

We are both inspired by and grateful for your investment in our school. Donations of $25 or $25,000 are greatly needed in order to continue delivering Brookwood’s legacy of educational excellence for years to come. As the season of giving back is upon us, we hope we can count on your renewed support again this year.

Why do you support Brookwood?
“There is no way to make everything go perfectly for our students, my own daughters included, but every day our students learn and grow in a community with perfect intentions. Teachers, coaches, advisors and administrators provide a net for students to fall back in and climb back up. For that, I will always be grateful and give back to Brookwood.”
Ray Falconer, P ’20, ’20, English Teacher & Advisor

Brookwood Fund 2018–19
Gifts to the Brookwood Fund have a direct impact on all aspects of our school—the students, employees and the academic, athletic, artistic, technological and everyday life of the school. These unrestricted funds are the highest priority to the school and are vital in providing the resources needed for both faculty and students to flourish. Thank you to the 501 donors and their families for demonstrating their loyalty and generosity to the Brookwood Fund and raising $429,739.78!

Spring Auction
Last year, the Brookwood Parents’ Association hosted a successful “Battle of the Bands” charity event that raised more than $105,000! These funds went toward operational support, Faculty Grants for professional development as well as cultural and educational enrichment for the community. Thank you to the dedicated members of the Parents’ Association for their countless volunteer hours throughout the year on these community building events.

Endowed and Capital Giving
Brookwood is fortunate to have donors who continue to invest in the school’s endowment through a variety of restricted funds. These gifts, along with other restricted capital gifts, are important to the long-term stability of the school. Thank you to the donors who invested $16,035.51 into the school with endowed and capital gifts.

Barb Liston Endowment Gifts for Financial Assistance
In August 2018, the Brookwood community mourned the loss of a beloved member of our community, Barb Liston. Throughout her 38 years at Brookwood, Barb made a lasting impression on thousands of students, parents and colleagues. Donations were made to Brookwood in memory of Barb Liston to support financial assistance— gifts which are instrumental in providing financial support so that the Brookwood experience is attainable for even more students. Through this endowment, Barb’s legacy will continue to make an impact on Brookwood for years to come.

Why do you support Brookwood?
“Brookwood nurtured a love of learning for our daughters, and they developed life-long connections with teachers and faculty. It is truly a very special place.”
Ian and Ashby Hatch, P ’15, ’18

Thank you! We are grateful for all that you do to support Brookwood School. Whether through time, treasure or talent, your gift truly made a difference.

Endowed Scholarship Funds

Gifts made to Brookwood’s Endowment in support of Financial Aid further the School’s commitment to enrolling students with a broad range of backgrounds, talents and interests. Gifts may be made to the General Endowed Scholarship Fund, or a named scholarship can be established with a minimum gift of $25,000. Additional gifts may be made to existing named funds to maximize the impact these funds have on our community. Donors who made contributions to these funds from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 are listed under the description.

The Elizabeth D. Begien Scholarship
The Elizabeth D. Begien Scholarship is named after Elizabeth Begien ’80 more affectionately known as “Bizzy.” Bizzy is remembered for her optimism, resilience, courage and compassion. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student who “exhibits a love of learning and life as well as caring for those around them.”
Lisa King in memory of Barb Liston

The Covington Scholarship
The Covington Scholarship established by Bonnie and Chris Covington, is awarded to a student of color entering an Upper School grade that exhibits outstanding effort and demonstrates qualities of character and leadership.

The Dodge Scholarship
The Dodge Scholarship is designed to promote diversity and is awarded to a student in the Upper School, who is in high academic standing, puts forth great effort in academics, exhibits qualities of leadership and character and has financial need.

The Josephine Henley Scholarship
The Josephine Henley Scholarship is awarded to a student who is in good standing within the Brookwood community. The opportunity to have a young, vibrant individual attend Brookwood, who would not otherwise have had the chance, is an honorable remembrance of Josephine Henley.

The Eliot Miles Herter Scholarship
The Eliot Miles Herter Scholarship is given to a student whose family demonstrates financial need and as a testament to a student’s hard work and a celebration of success to come. Miles Herter’s history with Brookwood School began in 1956. As an original incorporator of the school, a trustee from 1957-1974, the Board Treasurer from 1969-1974, a father of four alumni and a grandfather of yet another, Miles Herter’s impact on this community has been profound. More than anything else, Miles “was an easy guy to love. He was so understanding and so compassionate and he believed that everybody deserved a second and third chance in life.”
Lauren and David ’68 Herter

The Jaques Family Scholarship
The Jaques Family Scholarship is named after Marjorie Motley Jaques who believed that “love and a good education” are all a child needs. This scholarship goes to a student who is a well-respected member of the Brookwood community.

The Peterman-Klesken Scholarship
The Peterman-Klesken Scholarship is awarded to a student who has a compassion for and love of music. The goal is to name a recipient that has similar compassion and love of music as John Peterman’s father and Dan Klesken.
Mary K Phillips III

Ames Endowment Donors
The Gynna and Angier Ames Endowment for Faculty Support aims to assist faculty in their teaching, creative expression, and discoveries. Brookwood School works hard to recruit and foster the careers of transformative faculty who continue to be at the forefront of best practices in academia. This endowment will provide Brookwood faculty with the funding they need to enhance their areas of expertise and to bring that knowledge into their classrooms, ultimately impacting the Brookwood community as a whole. The Gynna and Angier Ames Endowment supports such programs as Faculty Grants and other areas of faculty support.

Student Scholarships in Memory of Barb Liston

In August 2018, the Brookwood community mourned the loss of a dedicated member of our community, Barb Liston. Throughout her remarkable service of 38 years, Barb touched the lives of thousands of students, parents and colleagues. From 1979-2017, Barb held a number of positions at Brookwood, including Homeroom Teacher, Basketball Coach, English Teacher, Athletic Director, Head of School, Head of Upper School and Assistant Head of School. Her deftness for enterprising pedagogy is unmistakable in The New Face of Rigor, and her legacy so poignantly and profoundly shapes the soul of Brookwood.

Donations from the following community members were made to Brookwood in memory of Barb Liston to provide financial assistance to families, enabling more students to experience Brookwood.

Why do you support Brookwood?
“Education is a priority for us! With three granddaughters having benefited from a learning environment like Brookwood where they enjoyed school and undoubtedly got a great education, sending financial assistance from our home state of Alabama has been top of mind.”
Jim and Julia Stephens, GP ’19, ’21, ’24
