Dear Parents,
Next Thursday, April 17, you’ll find Brookwood transformed. Our stairwells and hallways, alcoves, and gathering spaces will become a gallery of vibrant expression—a full-school celebration of student art. It’s more than a showcase. It’s a living reflection of our belief that art is not a supplement to learning—it’s a vital part of it.
This year’s theme—Nurture, Sustain, Celebrate: Artists with heART—captures what makes Brookwood’s visual arts program so meaningful. Our approach to teaching art isn’t about replication or product. It’s about guiding students to observe closely, think boldly, and create with intention. It’s about cultivating their visual language so they can better understand themselves, connect with others, and respond to the world around them.
Throughout the day, students across all grade levels will engage with art in new ways. They’ll tour the exhibit with buddy groups, contribute to a schoolwide collaborative piece inspired by Jim Dine, and explore a range of media and techniques through small-group Upper School workshops. During the workshops, students will create art with stones and sticks, illustrate super heroes, and design an outdoor installation. And in keeping with the theme, even lunch will reflect the celebration—artfully presented and shared in community.
The sheer scope and spirit of the day is a testament to our extraordinary Visual Arts team: Kathy Stewart, Alex Edwards, Sid Adams, Joe Cardoza, and Andrew Luman. Their work shines in the way a Kindergartener proudly describes their brushstrokes, the way an eighth grader returns to a sketchbook to refine an idea, the way a child pauses to notice a shape or color they hadn’t before. That kind of teaching leaves a lasting imprint.
We hope you’ll peruse the exhibits after School Meeting. It promises to be a true feast for the eyes—and the soul. 🎨
Warmly,
Jon Bartlett
Head of School
