February is a month full of celebration of literacy, kindness, and math in the Lower School!
On Wednesday, February 5, Lower School students gathered with classmates around the “fireplace” in Town Square while they enjoyed hot chocolate and listened to buddies, teachers, and other members of the Brookwood Community share their favorite stories together.
Valentine Exchange & Valentine’s Day themed dress day (red, purple, white, pink etc) hosted by the Upper School Student Leadership group.
On Thursday, February 13, each Lower School classroom will have a small Valentine’s Day exchange. Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to show appreciation and kindness in Lower School. In Lower School, if your child chooses to make valentines for classmates, we ask that one is made for each child in the class. As we look at store bought or homemade valentines, please be mindful of gender specificity and stereotypes inherent in some cards marketed to children that typecast what it is to be a certain gender. These thoughtful steps will ensure good feelings and a sense of community on a day meant to be fun, inclusive and uplifting. A question that often comes up is whether it’s “ok” to include candy in valentines. This year in Lower School, it is okay to include treats as long as they are individually wrapped. Classrooms will not be eating these in school, so any candy will be for your child to enjoy at home.
Lastly, later in the month, we are excited to host our Lower School Math Morning on Thursday, February 20.
The agenda for the morning includes:
* 7:45 a.m.-8:15 a.m. Math Games in your child's classroom
*8:15-9:00 Parent Math Workshop in Commons with Amy Walker and Elise Koretz: How Mathematical Ideas Grow Over Time
Drop in for a few minutes or stay for the whole time and enjoy playing some math games with your child! Your child will teach you how to play some of our favorite games and explain the strategies they are using to solve problems within the game contexts. If a family member is unable to attend, we can pair your child with another group and/or teachers that will be available to play math games. At 8:15 a.m., parents can join Amy Walker and Elise Koretz in the Commons for more information about math in the Lower School. We hope to see you there!
Warm regards,
Stacey Wright
